Test paint for lead content

Use an EPA-recognized lead test kit to test paint on all trim surfaces you plan to repaint. Test each color/layer separately. If ANY test is positive, follow lead-safe work practices for ALL surfaces.

Set up work area containment

Cover floor with 6-mil plastic sheeting extending at least 6 feet from work area. Seal edges with tape. Remove or cover furniture. Post warning signs if others are in the home.

Prep surfaces using wet methods

Mist surfaces lightly with water to suppress dust. Remove loose paint using a wet scraping method - spray area, scrape gently, wipe immediately with damp cloth. DO NOT dry sand or use heat guns.

Clean surfaces thoroughly

Clean all prep dust using a HEPA vacuum, then wipe surfaces with damp tack cloth. Clean twice - lead dust is not visible to the eye.

Fill imperfections and wet sand

Fill nail holes, dents, and gaps with wood filler. Once dry, wet sand smooth using 220-grit sandpaper with a wet sanding technique - keep sandpaper wet and wipe frequently.

Apply bonding primer

Apply a bonding primer designed to adhere to glossy surfaces and encapsulate old paint. Use a high-quality brush for trim work. Allow to dry per manufacturer instructions.

Apply finish paint (2 coats)

Apply two coats of semi-gloss or gloss paint designed for trim. Use a high-quality brush or foam roller for smooth finish. Light sand between coats with 220-grit wet sand.

Clean up using lead-safe practices

HEPA vacuum all plastic sheeting before folding. Fold plastic inward to contain dust, then bag in heavy-duty trash bags. Wipe all surfaces with damp disposable cloths. Dispose of waste according to local hazardous waste guidelines.
