Check your light bulbs - LED bulbs require an LED-compatible (CL-rated) dimmer. Standard incandescent dimmers can cause LED flickering, buzzing, or shortened bulb life. Check the dimmer packaging for "LED compatible" or "CL" rating.

Locate your electrical panel and turn off the breaker for the switch circuit. Multiple switches may share a circuit - use a voltage tester to confirm power is off at the specific switch.

Remove the cover plate screw and plate. Remove the two screws holding the switch to the box. Carefully pull the switch out, noting wire connections. Take a photo of the wiring before disconnecting.

Label wires with tape if there are multiple switches in the box
Identify the wires: hot (black), neutral (white bundle in box), and ground (bare copper or green). For single-pole switches, there will be two hot wires plus ground. For 3-way switches, there will also be traveler wires (may be red).

If you see red wires with a 3-way switch, note their positions carefully

Smart dimmers and some electronic dimmers require a neutral wire. Look in the switch box for a bundle of white wires connected together with a wire nut - this is the neutral bundle. If no neutral bundle exists, you'll need a dimmer that doesn't require neutral.

Neutral wire is a white bundle NOT connected to the old switch
The white wire TO the switch is not neutral - it's a re-marked hot
Lutron Caseta and some others work without neutral if needed
Loosen terminal screws and remove wires. For backstab connections, insert a small flathead into the release slot while pulling the wire. Handle with one hand when possible to minimize shock path through body.

If wires are nicked when removing, trim and re-strip the ends
Keep enough wire length to work with (6" minimum)
Don't let wire ends touch each other even with power off - habit builds safety

Connect dimmer wires according to manufacturer instructions. Typically: green/bare to ground, black dimmer wire to hot (line), red or second black to load (going to light), white to neutral bundle if required. Use wire nuts and wrap with electrical tape.

Carefully fold wires into box in accordion fashion. Push dimmer into box - dimmers are larger than standard switches, so wires may be tight. Secure with mounting screws. Check that dimmer sits flush and level.

Dimmers generate heat - don't overstuff the box
If wires are very tight, consider a box extender
Make sure no wires are pinched between dimmer and box

If dimmer doesn't fit, don't force - assess box size
Heat buildup can be a problem with multiple dimmers in one box
Install cover plate. Turn breaker back on. Test dimmer operation: verify lights turn on/off and dim smoothly. If lights flicker or have limited dimming range, proceed to calibration step.

Test full range from off to full brightness
Listen for buzzing at different dim levels
If flickering occurs, try different LED bulb brands
Warning
If dimmer is warm to touch after 15 minutes, check wattage load
If lights don't work at all, turn off power and recheck connections
Many LED dimmers have adjustment settings for minimum brightness (low-end trim) and maximum brightness (high-end trim). Adjust these so lights don't flicker at low settings and reach full brightness at max. See dimmer instructions for specific procedure.
